This is a universal relay. It can be used as a:

1.) "hard start" relay to bypass your ignition switch on older beetles.
2.) Headlight relay to run a low Amp toggle switch with lights that draw up to 40 Amps.
3.) Fan relay to take away the Amp draw from the ECU to your radiator fans.
4.) Fuel pump relay
5.) Anything else that you want to get the Amps away from

If you're using this as a head light relay, to figure out the amount of current your lights are using, use the total wattage of the light and divide by the volts. For instance if your lights are 100 Watts each then 100 Watts / 12 Volts = 8.33 Amps. So if you had four 100 Watt lights using 33.33 Amps of electricity and your toggle switch is only rated at 10amps then you could use that 10amp toggle switch to activate this 40amp relay and be covered for the 33.33amps of lights you're running.

For HID lights you would take the amount of Amps that the light is using and multiply by 3 for initial start up current. This is because HID's when initially started will draw more Amps than when the light is warmed up. For instance if your HID is 35 Watts then you would use the following formula: 35 Watts / 12 Volts = 2.92 Amps when warmed up but then you would take 2.92 Amps x 3 = 8.76 Amps on initial start up.

#86 Blue wire is switched power on. Use a 5 Amp fuse before the switch.

#87 Red wire goes to your lights, starter solenoid, fuel pump, or radiator fans providing up to 40amps when the switch turns #86 ON.

#87a Black wire is normally not used. It is rated at 20 Amps. When the toggle switch is turned OFF to 86 the 87a then becomes ON.

#30 Yellow wire is for 12v constant power. Use a 30 Amp fuse for this wire.

#85 Brown is a ground wire.
