    This set of rear 3 x 3 IRS rear trailing arms uses standard 1969 to 1979 beetle stub axles, bearings, seals, and spacers. These arms can also be used with beetle to bus or beetle to Porsche 930 ADAPTER stub axles. The arms do not have shock mounts welded to them allowing you to position the shock where ever is necessary for your sand rail, baja bug, or manx.

    The term 3 by 3 refers to the amount of inches wider and longer than a stock beetle trailing arm. On this particular set of arms they are 3 inches wider per side and 3 inches further towards the rear of the vehicle. If you have a beetle transmission you should need a 20.25 inch long axle. If you have a bus transmission you should need a 19.25 inch long axle. However, axle length could change based on your wheel alignment toe in or toe out and also where you have your transmission mounted in relation to the trailing arms. It is important to check your own axle length BEFORE you mount the axles on the vehicle.

    How To Measure An IRS Axle Length
    How to Measure IRS Axle Length:

    1.) First adjust your rear wheel alignment toe in. If your tires are toed out like a duck your trailing arms will be closer to your transmission resulting in a shorter axle.

    2.) Lift the trailing arm so that if you did have an axle it would be parallel to the floor at zero degrees. This is your shortest point.

    3.) Measure from the center of the drive flange on your transmission to the center of the stub axle on your trailing arm. DO NOT measure where your CV joint mounting surface is. You need to measure the bottom of each cup because this is where your axle will plunge into. If you purchase too long of an axle, when your trailing arm moves upward to zero degrees it will shove the axle into the transmission. This will mushroom the ends of your axles and eventually crush the ring gear inside your transmission.

    4.) After you have measured this distance, you subtract 1/4 inch total length. For instance if you measure from the center of the drive flange to the center of the stub axle and you get 20 1/2 inches you would buy a 20 1/4 axle.

    5.) Measure both sides of the car. It is VERY common to have unequal length axles.



    1. Inner Spacer: Face the inner bevel of the inner spacer towards the bottom of the stub axle.

    2. Inner Bearing: The inner bearing is the "ball bearing". This bearing does not have a removable inner race.

    3. Center Spacer: Long spacer goes in the middle, the direction does not matter.

    4. Outer Bearing: The outer bearing is the "roller bearing". This bearing has the removable inner race.

    5. Outer Spacer: This is very important! Face the outer beveled edge of this spacer towards the outer bearing.
