Splined shafts are commonly used to make a steering shaft. The splines allow you to rotate the shaft to the necessary position. Made from 5/8 outside diameter solid steel bar, the splines measure 5/8-36 but the smooth portion is 15mm diameter. There is a flat area for the pinch bolt on your universal joint or coupler to tighten down on to this shaft.
